St. John’s is a top integrated health system and our smoking cessation program began as a means of helping cardiac rehabilitation patients in our hospital. Capitalizing upon those early successes, we customized the program for our own co-workers and, in 1984, for our business partners. As we sought ways to help our business partners manage their cost trends, smoking cessation just made sense.
- Clients who complete the program show a 67% cessation rate at program completion and a 49% cessation rate after one year.
- Several Blue Cross Blue Shield plans used our Breathe online tobacco cessation tool. Their members were smoking an average of 14 cigarettes per day and had smoked for an average of 20 years. 56% reported they had quit smoking and of those who quit, 86% reported high confidence to remain tobacco free.
